Why have there only been a few American bike companies that have been willing to learn the technology necessary to develop innovative composite framesets?
There have only been a few American bike companies that have been willing to learn the technology necessary to develop innovative composite framesets because developing these frames requires more money and they usually have to enter the market at the high end of the price range. Many people probably could not afford to spend intensely high amounts of money on a bike and thus the companies would not earn back the extra time and money they spent in order to make these bikes.
Only a few American bike companies have been willing to learn the technology necessary to develop innovative composite framesets. The reason for this is because some of the metals needed to produce these bikes cost a ton of money. A good example for an expensive metal is carbon. Carbon is highly expensive but is proven to be one of the best metals for a bicycle. If only the cost would drop then maybe more American bicycle companies would be willing to learn about the technology necessary to develop innovative composite framesets.
The reason that only a few companies have been willing to make composite bikes is because since it takes so much more money and technology to make the bikes, they tend to be priced higher than other bikes and then not many people buy them because they are too expensive.
Few American companies have begun producing composite bikes for the simple reasons that the process requires much more money and better technicians than past methods have. Also, because of the higher price of the composite frame, only those already well off would spend the amount of money necessary to let the company turn a profit on the sale. Because of this, only a few of the higher end bicycle companies have begun working with composites.

In reality, the bike companies would be paying more, and while the price of the product increases, the demand will go down. Therefore, less of a profit is made.

The companies that are willing to research more technologically advanced bike frames are able to have the knowledge about the things that create the bikes. To make the bikes it would cost a lot of money, so the bike companies just stay with the normal bikes they use.
Most American bike companies do not take the time to learn the technology of composite framesets because of costs, sales, and maintaining their heritage. American bike companies do not want to waste money on something that is already dominated by foreign companies, and don’t want their composite bikes to be of lesser quality and more expensive than others. American bikes have always been reliable bikes which people trust and have usually held up to the competition, in steel frame bikes. When it comes to composite materials, though, American companies which are already being outdated by foreign companies in many other aspects don’t want to spend money of research and development.
